What is an antigen test?
An antigen test checks whether your body contains antigens of the coronavirus. Antigens are small pieces of protein from the virus that trigger the immune response in your body and can be found in your throat and/or nasal mucus. You can therefore test whether you have the corona virus by taking a sample of either your nasal or throat mucus and checking this sample in the test device.
What does the result mean?
If you have taken a validated antigen self-test and the result is positive, you may assume that this result is very reliable. With a positive result, you are almost certain that you are indeed infected with the coronavirus. If the antigen test is done by a professional, this reliability is even higher because this person knows how to take the test properly which reduces the margin of error.
If the result of the antigen test is positive, it is important that you stay inside and do not have any contact with your surroundings. If you have done a self test, it is important to have the results confirmed by a validated antigen test or PCR test done by a professional. If the result already comes from an antigen test done by a professional, an additional test for confirmation is not necessary. In that case you can trust the result of the test.
An antigen test is less sensitive than a PCR test. As a result, the test may not register enough antigens for a positive test result during the initial phase or the final phase of the infection. It is therefore possible that the test indicates 'negative' when you are infected with the coronavirus.
There is also a larger margin of error with the antigen self test. This is because you perform the test yourself and might not know how to do this correctly. Besides that, it is also possible that other environmental factors cause the test device to not function optimally.
In the event of a negative test, it is therefore important that you are still very concious and careful. Especially if you experience symptoms, work with vulnerable groups or if you are someone who is part of a high-risk group. Finally, in some situations, it might be a good idea to do an additional PCR test just to be sure.
Advantages of the antigen test
There are several advantages to the antigen test. First of all, the test is faster than the PCR test, which can be nice if you are in a rush to get the results. An antigen test provides the result within thirty - and sometimes even ten! - minutes.
In addition, the antigen test is often cheaper than the PCR test if you would like to have it done by a commercial provider. So, for example, if you do not necessarily need a PCR test because of symptoms but only because you would like to do the test as a check-up or for preventive reasons: this could be a cheaper option.
Finally, the great thing about the antigen self-test is that it is easy to take. You can take it whenever you want and wherever you want. And you don’t need an appointment or to travel somewhere. Of course this is not the case if you want to have the test taken by a professional; then you will have to go to a specific test location anyways.
