How does a saturation meter work?
A saturation meter works by absorbing the light types red and infrared. On one side of the oxygen meter, light is emitted by LED lights. The photocell on the other side of the device captures the light that has passed through the fingertip. Based on the amount of light, the meter accurately calculates the oxygen content.
When the oxygen level is low, the blood is dark in colour. This means that less light can get through. This is called low-oxygen blood. When the oxygen content is high, blood is lighter in colour and more light can shine through. This is oxygen-rich blood. A healthy oxygen value is between 95% and 99%.
How do you measure saturation?
Always read the manual of your oximeter well and make sure the batteries are in the device. So you can be sure of proper use.
- Make sure your hands are clean.
- Take a rest of 10 minutes before taking a measurement.
- Warm your hands before using the device.
- Insert the index finger, with the nail pointing upwards, into the pulse oximeter and switch it on.
- After a few seconds, the pulse oximeter will be ready.
- After a few seconds, the oxygen content can be read from the display
Why measure saturation?
By regularly measuring your oxygen content, you will gain insight into your lung and heart function. For the optimal functioning of the body is sufficient oxygen. Too little oxygen in the blood can cause problems and even be dangerous. This is called desaturation.
For people with a lung condition, for example, it is very important to monitor the oxygen level. Based on the saturation value, medication can be adjusted if necessary.
It is also important for sportsmen and women to know what the oxygen level in their blood is. This is because the amount of oxygen can drop during heavy exertion. If the saturation level is too low, an oxygen deficiency occurs, which is dangerous. Especially mountain athletes should keep a close eye on their saturation, especially when they're at high altitude.
When to measure saturation?
In case of shortness of breath, tightness of the chest or rapid fatigue, it is wise to perform a measurement. These factors can indicate a too low level of oxygen in the blood. An oxygen measurement will clarify whether this is the case. When you have no underlying health problems, but the value is too low, please contact your doctor.
Is every saturation meter reliable?
Medical devices must meet certain requirements before they can be sold, they are therefore extensively tested. This also applies to saturation meters. We may therefore assume that every oxygen meter gives a reliable measurement. Often more expensive meters have a better sensor.

When measuring low oxygen levels, the saturation meter is less reliable. There can be many reasons why the measurement is low, so it does not necessarily mean that there really is a deviation. Pay attention to the points below to prevent the oxygen meter from taking an inaccurate measurement.
- Cold fingers; warm your hands well before measuring
- Wearing nail polish or artificial nails; make sure the nails are clean so that the light can get through
- Nervousness or movement; sit or lie down quietly for 10 minutes before measurement
